An effective on-line mechanical system is the ANSWER
Biological fouling (due to biofilm & slime), precipitation fouling (due to crystallization), particulate fouling (due to sedimentation of suspended solids) and corrosion fouling (due to concentration cell and oxidation cell type and galvanic corrosion) in heat exchanger tubes are constant problem maintenance, industrial and process engineers are faced with for decades…even RIGHT NOW!

Brush-Type On-line Mechanical Cleaning System
Because of the inconvenience of unbolting the exchangers heads, extended system down-time, and associated cost of shut-downs, a variety of on-line cleaning methods have been used to prolong the time between scheduled shut-downs.

Spring-Type On-line Mechanical Cleaning System
Heat exchanger tube with spring inserts have been applied for many years in refineries and chemical plants. The system is based on the actions of moving or fixed metal inserts inside the heat exchange tube. Through increased turbulence and movements, either by axial or radial vibrational mode or rotational mode, a reduction of the tube side fouling can be achieved.
